Problem: Half a million homeless people
This is an underestimate. A major contributor is the ever-rising price of housing. When people don’t have the bare necessity of having a roof over their heads, they are far more susceptible to declining physical and mental health, violence, and drug use. Ultimately this prevents them from being productive members of society.
Solution: Put a roof over their heads
It seems obvious, but if we build a large social housing program that provides the basic amenities at a reasonable rent, homelessness becomes a temporary situation for most, and prevents them from the downward spiral that comes with prolonged homelessness. The UK has done this and has brought their homeless population down to less than 5000. Not only is this ethical, according to the HUD it saves us money when you take into account how much it costs to have police keep the homeless population in order.
